The Aquatic Ecosystem — The Hydrosphere on Planet Earth

About this lesson

This unit introduces the hydrosphere and the water cycle in nature. It explains that the hydrosphere is the water on Earth, covering about 70% of the surface, with about 97% being salty water in oceans and seas, about 2% frozen in polar ice caps and glaciers, and only about 1% available as fresh water for human use. The unit describes the water cycle as a nearly closed system involving processes such as evaporation, condensation, precipitation, infiltration, transpiration, and excretion. It highlights the role of plants in transpiration, which occurs through stomata and helps cool the plant and pull water upward through xylem, and the role of living organisms in excretion, releasing wastes like carbon dioxide, water vapor, and nitrogenous wastes. By the end, a student should be able to identify the distribution of water on Earth, describe the processes of the water cycle, and explain the biological contributions to the cycle, as well as answer objective and essay questions on these topics.
